Prep Bluegum

Welcome to Prep Bluegum!

Class Teachers:

Lindy Rahn ( Monday- Thursday)

Megan Rennie ( Friday)

Our classroom is a busy, bright, and bustling environment where teachers and students work together under the guidelines of our vision and mission statements to develop a learning community that embodies a culture of respect, a thirst for knowledge, a willingness to have a go, and living the Gospel values of faith, love, service and compassion.

Curriculum Areas

Prep is a very busy and exciting year. We begin a more structured learning program encompassing a variety of subject areas that fall under the Australian Curriculum.

Our Religious Education program is based on the Good News for Living curriculum and incorporates a variety of concepts and experiences.

There are several strands that will be covered in our Mathematics program this year. These are Number, Measurement, Space, Chance and Data, Pattern and Working Mathematically (problem solving).

The English strands incorporated into the prep program include; Speaking and Listening, Reading, Writing, Spelling and Handwriting. As part of the English program, children are participating in the Letters and Sounds  program, which is a multi-leveled introduction to reading and writing.

The Arts incorporates Dance, Drama, Music, Media and Visual Arts. We set time aside each week to explore and experience this curriculum area. Some of these strands are incorporated into other curriculum areas, such as English, Physical Education and Science.

The Science curriculum in Bluegum is based both on the Australian Curriculum and the Primary Connections program. Topics covered in Science are also directed by the interests and ideas of the children.

Technology is often incorporated into the science curriculum, but children will also have the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge in ICT through dedicated computer/IPad lessons, as well as through other learning experiences throughout the year. IPads and laptops are available for children to use in the classroom.

History and Geography are important elements of the prep curriculum as they allow students the opportunity to discover more about themselves, their families, and the world they live in and its historical development.

Languages other than English (LOTE). This year the children have the opportunity to learn about the language and culture of China. Miss Flora Cheng is the Chinese teacher at JPII, and children have their lesson every Thursday afternoon.

Physical Education lessons this year will be taken by me on Wednesdays. The health component of the curriculum will be taught in the classroom. The physical education lessons will focus on increasing each child’s motor skills, fitness and sports specific skills. Children are to wear their school sports uniform on Wednesdays.

Assessment and Reporting

Students will receive a mid-year and end-of-year which will indicate their progress in all curriculum areas and in personal/social development. In the next two weeks I will be completing PIPS testing on the children. PIPS is an assessment designed to measure children’s progress in literacy and numeracy, and will be conducted twice during the year. It is also a useful planning tool for teachers, who can use the results to better cater for their students. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s progress in the classroom please come and see me anytime.

Excursions

Excursions are integrated into many curriculum areas in our school. Our school bus allows classes the opportunity to attend a varied number of places around Hobart and the local community to enhance their understanding of the work we do in the classroom.

Newsletters and Information

Newlsetters are emailed out to families each fortnight. If you need to add your email to the database or wish to receive a hard copy of the newsletter, please see Anne or Meryl at the office.

Yesterday you would have noticed that the notices from the office came home in a clear wallet. This is how I will be sending notes and information home this year, could I please ask that families return their clear folder to school as soon as convenient after notices go home.

Teacher Contact

If you ever have any comments, questions or concerns please see me before or after school, or alternatively book in a time for a longer chat if necessary. I can also be contacted at any time on my email address – liz.graham@catholic.tas.edu.au
